Black Box Video: How to Find Potential Products with Opportunity to Sell

How to Find Potential Products with Opportunity to Sell on Amazon Using Black Box

Finding the right products to sell on Amazon is crucial to building a successful business. With millions of products on the platform, choosing randomly is a recipe for failure. Instead, you need a strategic approach to discover products that present the best opportunities for profitability. Helium 10’s Black Box tool is designed to do just that—help you find high-potential products based on the specific criteria you set.

Why Is Product Research Important?

Effective product research can make or break your Amazon business. The right product not only has market demand but also provides room for growth with relatively low competition. By identifying products that fit this profile, you’re positioning yourself to maximize sales and profits. Black Box simplifies this process by letting you set your criteria and returning products that meet them, saving you from trial and error.

How to Use Black Box for Product Research

Black Box offers various filters to narrow down your search, helping you find products that meet your specific needs. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using Black Box for product research.

Step 1: Open Black Box

Once you’re in Helium 10, navigate to the Black Box tool under the Product Research tab. Make sure you’re in the Advanced version rather than the simplified one, as this provides access to a greater range of filters that will help you refine your search.

Step 2: Choose Your Categories

One of the first things you’ll want to do is choose the product categories you’re interested in. For example, if you’re interested in products within Home & Kitchen, Kitchen & Dining, or Patio, Lawn & Garden, you can select those specific categories to focus your search.

Step 3: Set the Number of Sellers Filter

If you're focusing on private label products, you might want to limit your search to products with fewer sellers to avoid crowded listings. Setting the Number of Sellers filter to a maximum of two ensures you're not competing against wholesalers or resellers. If you’re a wholesaler yourself, you can adjust this filter based on your needs.

Step 4: Set Sales Volume Filter

For a more targeted approach, you can specify the Monthly Sales(units) volume. A product selling between 150 to 400 units per month might indicate steady demand without being overly competitive. Depending on your strategy, you can adjust this range.

Step 5: Set the Price Range

Next, set a Price range for the products you want to explore. For instance, selecting a range between $20 and $40 ensures that you’re targeting products with a solid profit margin, especially after factoring in costs like fulfillment and advertising.

Step 6: Filter by Review Count

Another key indicator of product opportunity is the Review Count. Setting a maximum of 150 reviews can help you find newer products with fewer established competitors. Products with low reviews but solid sales present an opportunity to outperform existing listings with better marketing and optimization.

Step 7: Look for Poor Listings

An often-overlooked metric is the number of images in a product listing. A well-optimized Amazon listing should have a full set of high-quality images (up to seven). Set the Number of Images filter to a maximum of three to identify listings that are not fully optimized. If a product is selling well with only a few images, it suggests that the rest of the listing may also be subpar, creating an opportunity for you to optimize your listing and outperform the competition.

Step 8: Use Variation Count Filter

For simplicity, you can set the Variation Count filter to a maximum of one. This narrows down the search to stand-alone products, avoiding listings with multiple sizes or colors that can complicate inventory management.

Step 9: Save Your Filters

Once you’ve found a set of filters that work well for your research, make sure to save them. This allows you to quickly replicate your search criteria the next time you use Black Box without manually inputting the filters again. The Save as Filter Preset button is at the bottom right next to the search button.

Step 10: Review and Analyze Results

Once you hit Search, Black Box will return a list of products that match your criteria. If the result shows over 200 products, you’ll want to narrow your filters further. Too many results mean you’re casting too wide a net, which increases the chances that other sellers are looking at the same products.

After refining your filters, review the list of products. You’ll see important details like the Review Count, Monthly Sales, and Retail Price. Products with low reviews but solid sales volume are usually prime candidates. Additionally, Helium 10 provides graphs for BSR (Best Sellers Rank), Price History, and Sales History, allowing you to track a product's performance over time.

Example: Spotting Opportunities in Poor Listings

Let’s take a look at an example. You might come across a product like a wooden coffee pod holder that’s selling 200–300 units per month but only has three images in its listing. If you open the product on Amazon, you might notice it lacks A+ content and has a one-line product description. Despite these shortcomings, the product is doing over $10,000 in sales per month. This presents a golden opportunity: a strong-performing product that’s poorly optimized, allowing you to step in with better content, more images, and a stronger overall listing to capture market share.

Key Takeaways

  • Set specific filters: Define the criteria that best match your business model, such as price range, number of reviews, and sales volume.
  • Look for under-optimized products: Products with few images or poor descriptions often signal opportunities for improvement and growth.
  • Narrow down results: If your search returns more than 200 results, refine your filters to focus on a smaller, more manageable list of products.
  • Check sales history: Use Helium 10’s data to analyze a product's historical performance before committing to it.

By using Black Box’s comprehensive filters, you can uncover hidden opportunities in the massive Amazon marketplace, positioning yourself for success with products that have both demand and room for improvement.

Start experimenting with your criteria today, and let Black Box help you find your next profitable Amazon product!
